Weekly Highlights August 10th to 16th

This week we will see some severe storms break out in the Plains and into the Midwest on Sunday through Tuesday. Warmer temps and higher dew points in this area could spawn some tornadoes. Off the Florida coast there is an upper-level low bringing some rain to Florida. That system should last a few days and could bring several inches of rain to the Florida Coast and areas of the Southeast. Tuesday, some severe weather looks to impact the Upper Great Lakes brining some gusty storms. A tornado could be possible, but dew point temps will only be in the 50’s. Wednesday, severe weather looks to impact the Northeast and into the Mid-Atlantic states. That trend could continue Thursday for the Mid-Atlantic States and into the Carolinas, as more severe weather looks to develop. Saturday, more storms look to impact the High Plains and Upper Great Lakes. Dew point temps look to be in the 60’s and 70’s in the High Plains and areas of MN and Wi, so a tornado or two could be possible from those storms.

More of the heat and humidity looks to return to the Plains, Midwest and portions of the East. We won’t see the hot temperatures we saw consistently a few weeks ago, but we could see a 90-degree day here and there. The West continues to be hot and dry this week. We still are dealing with the smoke and hazy conditions from the Canadian wildfires, with much of the eastern part of the US seeing the worst conditions. Smoke from the Canadian wildfires is even reaching parts of Texas. The wildfires going on out west especially in Northern Colorado, California, and the Dakota’s are not helping the air quality. As these hot and dry conditions continue, it is hurting the firefighting effort to try and contain these fires. The tropics this week look to be dormant but a new area off the coast of Africa has gained some attention with the NHC predicting it could develop into something over the next 7 days, we will have to see if something does form.
