Weekly Highlights September 28th to October 4th

This week in the Atlantic, Tropical Depression 9 expected to strengthen and take the name Imelda. Forecast models suggest it will become a hurricane as it tracks closer to the U.S. While it’s not expected to make landfall, the Carolina coast could see some rain and gusty winds offshore by Tuesday.

We’re also keeping an eye on Hurricane Humberto a Cat 4, which is still out in the open Atlantic. Humberto will turn north and won’t threaten the U.S., but it plays an interesting role in the bigger picture. Through something called the Fujiwhara Effect—when two storms get close enough that they start to “dance” around each other—Humberto will steer Imelda away from the U.S. mainland and out to sea.

On the other side of the country, the Pacific Northwest will see rounds of showers and thunderstorms this week. While some wet weather will be welcome news for the region as it helps tamp down wildfires that have been burning. The smoke and hazy conditions look to keep improving across the eastern part of the US. The Upper Great Lakes and parts of Iowa on Saturday, could see a chance for severe storms to develop. Sunny and warm conditions will continue out across the Southern Plains and into Texas.
