Today showers and thunderstorms in the Upper Great Lakes all the way down the Plains and into the Mississippi Valley. Showers and thunderstorms out in the Mid-Atlantic States as well. Some of the showers and thunderstorms today and later tonight have a possibility to become severe near SE Texas/Louisiana. Those storms will be isolated to that area. The main story today is Category 5 Hurricane Melissa just a few hours away from making landfall on the western portion of Jamaica. With sustained winds of 175mph, heavy rains 20-30”, and landslides, the western portion of Jamaica looks to have catastrophic damage as a result. Hurricane Melissa will weaken after making landfall and reemerge in the Atlantic as a Category 2 hurricane sometime tomorrow.
