Weekly Highlights April 19th to 25th

This Week cooler weather has settled across the Northern Plains, Great Lakes, and much of the Northeast to start the week, bringing a noticeable change from recent milder conditions. This cooler pattern is expected to persist for a few days before a gradual warmup develops by mid-week. However, this brief return to milder temperatures will not last long, as another push of cooler air will come down next weekend. In the Northeast, Sunday will feature a mix of snow flurries and rain, with many areas seeing at least a light coating of snow. Portions of upstate New York, along with northern areas in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, could receive between one and three inches of accumulation, particularly in higher elevations.

Attention then turns to the southern and central United States, where showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Texas will see rounds of storms, while Tuesday brings storm activity into the Ohio Valley. Some of these storms may become severe, especially across the Ohio Valley where gusty winds will be a primary concern.

Thursday into Friday will bring a return of wintry conditions to parts of the Northern Plains. Snowfall accumulations in this region are expected to range from one to four inches. Meanwhile, the Rockies and Sierra Nevada will also experience snowfall throughout the week, with some locations likely to see totals exceeding four inches.

Severe weather potential increases again later in the week. By Thursday, conditions across the Plains and into portions of the Midwest may support the development of strong to severe thunderstorms. This threat is expected to expand from Friday into Saturday, with storms developing across the Plains and tracking into the Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys. These storms could bring a full range of hazards, including damaging winds, hail, and the possibility of tornadoes.
